No Meat Mondays

No Meat Mondays is all about helping people to have one day a week free of meat, but this does not necessarily have to be a Monday!! Start experimenting with flavours and vegetables and discover that they can create exciting colourful meals without always relying on meat.

There are dozens of reasons why going meat-free, even for just one day a week is better for you and the environment – not to mention better for the animals! As more studies are conducted by organisations around the world, it’s becoming more apparent that cutting down on consumption of meat has global benefits. Most recently, it’s been discovered that regularly eating processed meat such as sausages and bacon, has a direct link to increased cancer risk.

Eating less meat and more vegetables is not only great for your health but also good for the planet too! UN’s top climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri states that “People should consider eating less meat as a way of combating global warming. UN figures suggest that meat production puts more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than transport.” The amount of energy used in the supply chain for meat is much greater than that of the supply chain for non-meat products. Not to mention the amount of food and water which is needed to feed the animals – resources that could be used to reduce world hunger.

It’s calculated that it takes around 7kg of wheat to produce 1kg of meat – which could instead be used to feed 10 people a day. Calculate that on a global scale – there would be more than enough food to feed the hungry.
